In 1994, Roches AMPLICOR HIV-1 MONITOR became the first commercially available test to measure quantities of HIV-1 in blood (viral load), and in 1996, it was the first nucleic acid test approved by the FDA for measuring viral load. It is a highly sensitive test, proven to consistently detect viral loads as low as 50 copies/ml. Since the goal of treatment is to reduce the viral load to as low a level as possible, the AMPLICOR HIV-1 MONITOR Test is an essential tool for monitoring the success of HIV-1 treatment
