HIGHLIGHTS FROM HAMBURG

Over 2,900 delegates attended the VIth European Conference on Clinical Aspects and Treatment of HIV-Infection in Hamburg, 11 - 15 Oct 97. Delegates included HIV physicians, specialist nurses, clinical researchers, PWA-group representatives and people with AIDS.

Clinical presentations and discussion addressed the major issues and day-to-day concerns of HIV/AIDS treatment including:

Combination therapy Drug compliance CMV infection
Virology Protease inhibitors Genetherapy
Haematology Immunology Bacterial infections

Notable speakers such as Professor Luc Montagnier, on �Towards new HIV vaccine approaches,� and Arjen Broekhuizen, on �The European AIDS Treatment Group - A European advocacy group of people affected by HIV and AIDS�, addressed the congress.

Roche will be hosted two symposia at Hamburg:

�Re-defining the role of CMV Infection�
Saturday 11 October

The symposium included discussion on the impact of HAART on CMV disease (Dr Bruce Polsky) and whether HAART protects against CMV disease in PWA's with very low CD4 counts? (Dr Richard Pollard).

HAART: tailoring therapy to the individual
Sunday 12 October

This HAART symposium included discussions on clinical trial evidence (Dr Hans-J�rgen Stellbrink), quality as well as quantity of life (Dr Graeme Moyle), and HAART therapy for women and children (Dr Frank Duff).
